CHINA HONG KONG FRENCH INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL EXTENSION Key figures * Floor area : 10,600 sq. m. * Concrete : 6,000 cu m * Reinforcement : 1,000 T * Formwork : 30,000 sq. m. * Piles : 32 bored piles, 52 minipiles, 215 soil nails * Construction period : Jul 1997 - Jan 1999 * Completion time : 19 months General Description Engineering and construction of the extension to the French International School, an 8-storey secondary school building for 580 pupils, including 32 classrooms, administration facilities, a gymnasium, a covered playground, a library, a canteen, three staff quarters, a basement car-park and a roof car-park for school buses. In its location bridging a very steep valley, the building has required particularly detailed preparation works, as well as the diversion of a nullah. The style of contractual arrangement was, to say the least, novel. The school, with limited funds, tendered on a traditional basis of architect design but found bids exceeded their budget by 30%. Dragages et Travaux offered to re-design the school, examine the methods of construction and ultimately offer to do a target price two stage bid. First stage was to re-visit the design to optimise the structure and overcome some of the more difficult aspects of the site. Cost savings were then derived from alternative finishes and reconfiguration of the parking access. The second stage, having met thye budget target was to construct the school whilst continuing to share with the client cost savings and to expnd such savings on improvements to the schools environment. Brett K Jamieson devised the form of contract to meet the client's needs and concluded negotiates which facilitated the award. Client : Victor Segalen Association Ltd. Contractor : Dragages et Travaux Publics (HK) Ltd Architect : Ling Chan & Partners (concepted by Traits Architects) Structural Engineer : Ove Arup & Partners Building Services : Parsons Brinckerhoff Asia Contract Value : US$ 15.1 million (HK$ 107 million) |
